  1. I especially like the quieter sections of this piece. It must be the use of certain instruments but I’m sure I hear Dvorak. Do you know why it’s called a “Northern” ballad?

    1. « A Northern Ballad was written at a time of continuing controversy over the importance and manner of nationalism in music, a legacy of Dvorak’s statements made during his term as Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. Both its title and content suggest another step in Parker’s move away from German influences, a process begun a few years earlier with his setting of the Irish legend Cdhal Mor of the Wine – Red Hand, in 1895 » (William Kearns, Horatio Parker, 1863-1919: His Life, Music, and Ideas Metuchen (NJ) & London, 1990, p. 221).

          1. I visited Scotland years ago, when my sister was a balletmaster at the Scottish Ballet in Glasgow, but never went to Ireland. It may be that in the near future I will be able to make up for this lack of mine, if I manage to organize a journey taking advantage of the fact that my second son currently lives and works in England. But I have a problem: my dog, a Labrador named Puck, is now old and has osteoarthritis, so he is not able to face such a journey, and honestly I don’t feel like leaving him even for a few days.
