    1. When, in the late nineteenth century, the complete works of Purcell were published in the United Kingdom, most of the lyrics of catches like this one were replaced with anodyne verses that would not offend the sensibilities of Queen Victoria’s subjects.
      Many things bring Purcell closer to Mozart: one is precisely having set to music salacious, obscene or irreverent texts. One among others is having composed pieces of breathtaking beauty that touch the soul deeply.

    1. Quando, a fine Ottocento, nel Regno Unito si procedette alla pubblicazione delle opere complete di Purcell, gran parte dei testi dei catches come questo furono sostituiti con versi anodini che non urtassero la sensibilità dei puritanissimi sudditi della regina Vittoria.
      Ci sono molte cose che avvicinano Purcell a Mozart: una è appunto l’aver musicato testi salaci, osceni o irriverenti. Una fra le altre è l’aver composto brani di una bellezza mozzafiato che toccano l’anima nel profondo.
