La cantata fu composta appositamente per la celeberrima «scena dello sparo», che si svolge nella Royal Albert Hall di Londra, nel film L’uomo che sapeva troppo (The Man Who Knew Too Much, 1934) di Alfred Hitchcock; per il rifacimento del 1956 fu ancora utilizzata la musica di Benjamin, ma apportando alcune modifiche al testo e, curate da Herrmann, alla partitura.
